Leanne MacKay is a production designer and set designer currently based in Vancouver, Canada.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree of Visual Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2008, she moved to Berlin, Germany. From 2009-2015 she worked under the mentorship of highly esteemed German Production Designer Sebastian Soukup whilst developing her own career in parallel. The films she has contributed to have played at hundreds of festivals worldwide, including Venice, Berlinale and Sundance. She has has worked alongside such notable directors as Roy Andersson and Wim Wenders.
Leanne transitioned into set designer and food stylist for editorial campaigns in 2016, bringing her cinematic approach to composing still images.
From 2017 - 2022 Leanne lived in Querétaro, Mexico. She returned to her arts background and completed a diploma in ceramics at Centro de las Artes de Querétaro, Santiago de Querétaro. While the world went into quarantine she subsequently began to focus on her own practice, creating handmade sculptural light objects. Simultaneously she took on the role of assistant director and worked closely with documentary filmmaker Odín Javier Solis Andrade during the development of his film.
Leanne continues to develop her ceramics practice and is in the development stage of her own documentary film. She had the privilege to be the last artist in residence at the Sikås Art Centre May-June 2023, where she was able to focus on her writing in the remote Swedish tundra.
